Clay Poker Chips

Bring the Real Feel to your Poker Game

Purchasing a set of clay poker chips allows you to bring an authentic casino experience to your home game.  The sound, weight and feel of the clay poker chip, combine to create an authentic poker experience.

Before you search the web for a set of poker chips, there are some guidelines to consider.  Poker chip materials range from cheap plastic (which are too light) to very expensive all clay chips, which are most commonly used at your local casino.  The most popular, affordable and preferred chip being sold is the composite clay chip.  These chips consist of a composite acrylic material (clay-like exterior surface) surrounding a metal insert for weight.  They are the best bet for your buck, as they feel and sound like all clay, without the expensive price tag (and no one will know the difference).

Chips range in weight from 8.5 grams to 13.5 grams, but the 8.5 g chips are just too light for an authentic feel.  The 13.5 are too heavy for chip tricks.  The ideal weight is 11.5 grams.

Chip sets range in number from 300 – 1000 chips.  For a ten player game, a 500 or 1000 chip set will suffice.  If you are planning a single table tournament, a 500 chip set works well, but a two table tournament requires 1000 chips.

Poker chips are available plain, with denominations or even with artwork.  Greater flexibility for your game plans is available using the non-denominational chips.  This is especially true for tournament play, where you may need to color up.  Verify you will have enough of each color in the chip set you purchase.

More convenient chip sets come in a carrying case, which makes it easier to transport them.  Some include decks of cards, a dealer button and small and big blind buttons.  However, the buttons can be bought inexpensively elsewhere, so don’t factor that in to your decision.
