Starting a Home Poker Tournament: home game setup

We've all been there. Our weekly game gets cancelled, and suddenly we find ourselves in poker limbo. That's when it's time to start a home poker game of your own. How do you go about starting a poker game at your home? Here are several steps to consider:

  • Purchase the necessary poker supplies. The basics include: poker table, chairs, poker chips and cards. You may want to add extras like a card shuffler, dealer/blind buttons, and chip trays. Buy within your budget. Affordability is key.
  • Initially, invite only those people that you know. Over time, trusted players will add additional players to the game. Keep control of your numbers. Don't let the game spiral out of control.
  • Choose the right game for the players. If your poker buddies are beginners, you may want to start with an easy-to-learn version like five-card draw or seven-card stud, rather than Texas Holdem, which is more difficult for novices.
  • Choose appropriate stakes. Keep them high enough to be exciting, but not so high that the losers will be in financial trouble.
  • Choose whether to use antes or blinds. Forced bets help keep the action going.
  • Determine minimum and maximum bets. A rule of thumb - have the minimum bet equal the amount of the big blind or ante, if blinds aren't used.
  • Choose the food and drink. You may wish to avoid messy or sticky foods, as they can lead to chip or card damage. Pretzels, chips, and nuts are a good choice. Don't be afraid to ask players to contribute to snacks - after all, you are providing the location!
