Howard Lederer poker player biography

Howard was born in New Hampshire, where he frequently played cards with his family. He was first introduced to poker in this way, and was thrilled when he was able to win against his father. This is where Howard first learned of his competitive nature, which has served him well since then.

Howard initially intended to attend college, but decided to leave to pursue his interest in chess, at the age of 18. While playing chess, he was re-introduced to poker, and began playing 70 to 80 hours per week. Realizing that he was wearing himself out, and playing badly because of it, Howard slowed down on his poker play, but never quit. When Texas Holdem became popular in New York in the 80s, Howard began playing at the Mayfair Club with future professionals Dan Harrington and Erick Seidel.

In 1993, Lederer made the move to Las Vegas, to allow better access to poker games. He played cash games consistently until 2002, when he began playing large buy-in no-limit holdem tournaments. In 2003, Howard won 2 World Poker Tour events. He won the WPT Foxwoods event, with a prize of $345,400 and theParty PokerMillion event for $263,850. He also placed 3rd in the World Poker Tour Battle of Champions, and won the Bellagio World Poker Classic. In addition to his WPT wins, Lederer has also taken home 2 World Series of Poker Bracelets. As of 2005, his total tournament winnings exceeded $2,700,000.

When Howard is not playing poker, he does not sit idle. He has created an instructional poker video, Howard Lederer's Texas Hold'Em instructional DVD series- Howard "Tells" All , and he runs the Howard Lederer Poker Fantasy Camp.
