In 1977, Sam moved to the United States, where he attended the University of Kansas. After earning a degree in Business Administration, Sam moved to Houston, Texas, where he began working. He eventually started playing poker with friends, in a 50 cent/hand game. Realizing he had an affinity for poker, Sam took a trip to Vegas, where he was able to turn $2000 into $7000. After 4 years of playing poker, he quit his job to play poker full-time.

Among his accomplishments:

  • 1996 - won the Pot Limit Omaha event at the World Series of Poker.
  • 2002 - 2nd place in the Pot Limit Omaha event at the WSOP.
  • 2003 - 2nd place in the main event at the World Series of Poker (prize of $1,300,000). A few months later, Poker Stars held a rematch between Sam and Chris Moneymaker, which Sam won.
  • 2005 - finished in the money at the WSOP.
  • as of 2006 - total tournament winnings exceed $1,600,000.

Sam is well-known for the trademark cigarette he brings to the poker tables. Oddly enough, Sam does not smoke. He is superstitious, and believes the cigarette brings him luck.

Currently, Sam Farha is working on a poker book. He is a spokesman for Harrah's in Las Vegas, and can be seen on the Game Show Network's new series "High Stakes Poker".
