No-Limit Poker

Observation:  The Key to No-Limit Poker

No-limit poker has several important aspects that a good poker player should be aware of.  These are:

  • timing
  • skill
  • luck
  • observation

Just the Right Time
Timing is an important aspect in the game of poker, especially in the later stages of a large multi-table poker tournament.  Stealing blinds without running into a big pocket pairs, and avoiding players who trap, requires good timing.  Knowing when to semi-bluff a pot, or move over top of a player, are assets in a no-limit poker tournament.

Poker Skills
The more experience and skill you gain at no-limit, and the more time you spend playing poker, the more your game will improve.  Developing the skills necessary to beat your opponents can be acquired through study, as well as hours of online poker.  Play poker often.  Try sit n go  poker tournaments to learn and improve your game of no-limit.  They provide an hour or 2 of quality no-limit experience for a small entry fee, combined with the opportunity to win money.  Don't practice on play money tables, if you intend to play for real money anyway.  Play money games are not realistic, and don't allow any real skill development.

Getting Lucky
Like any game of chance, poker requires luck.  You will need that luck at some point to carry you through your poker game.  The trick is too reduce the amount of luck you rely on, and make your game more about skill.

Observation
In the first 15 minutes of play at a no-limit tournament table, your observations should give you a good idea of the type of players at your table.  By observing the other players' actions preflop, and at the flop, turn and river, you will gain information to use later.  Be sure to observe the hands you don't play, as well.

The best way to know your opponent's ability, is seeing his cards on the river.  Anytime a player shows his cards, he is giving away information (learn the best kept secret in online poker - see your opponents mucked cards).  On the same note, don't show your cards unless you have to.  Don't provide your opponents with information on how you play.  Choose to automatically muck all losing hands.

The game of poker is often said to be 50% skill and 50% luck.  Remember, your poker game should involve a good amount of observation as well.
